Is it not spring?

More snow on its way tomorrow?

Will winter never end?

Put Thingamajigger back into her hidey hole until snow passes.

Morale has again been squashed.

Heckeblendes installed

So I got the Heckeblendes cleaned up and painted.

They really are only a basic piece of fiberglass, rigid enough to stay where you want them, but simple enough.  Test fitting them, I needed to grind away a corner a bit to allow the flush fitment with the tail light lens.

So after scuffing up the gel coat, I primed them and painted them my trim black color.  Then set about to adhere them to my taillights.

I like the sikaflex product and obtained a new tube of black for these and for my intake scoops.  I also ended up using a couple screws as well to keep the heckeblendes secure.

Allowed to cure overnight, and Voila!

I like these.  Sure they serve absolutely no purpose except for aesthetics, but I still like them.

Grille spoiler

The German translation is 'spoiler', but it's more of a mask or a trim piece than a spoiler.

Got this in Germany from Rhoen Bull and I am still not sure I like it.

Just placed there now, not adhered.  Will look at it for a while and then decide.

Sexy!

Oooooh yeah, now that is sexy!

Got the intake scoops back.  Paint match is good.  Too cold to do myself in my garage, so I had a friend do it.

Received them yesterday.  Brought them home and prepped the parts for more paint.

Painted the insides of the scoops with my trim paint to match the intake grilles.

When fitting the scoops, I needed to trim up the lower rear corners of the intake grilles.  I did not use my nice ones - had another pair that I trimmed up.

With the sikaflex adhesive this is a non issue and will be very secure.

The inner most screws were a bitch, had to use a right angled screwdriver to secure it after gluing and allowing to set up overnight.

Mounted this morning.

There is a relief cut into the scoop at the rearmost lower corners.  Theoretically, this should allow for water taken in to collect on back of scoop and expell out.  I made sure the sikaflex was also aiming towards this small relief.

I am liking the looks of these, the profile is not obtrusive and with them painted the body color they do not look aggressive and unsightly (IMO).

Pinewood Derby day

This Friday is my kids derby.

He has done great job at replicating his version of an Indy car.  His 6 year old paint skills with a rattle can are quite good now.  Tonight he gets to add his decals and we will install wheels and axles together.

As for the parents class - here is my entry (loosely based on a Doka)

Comes in at exactly 5 ounces.  It is of proper length, width and height.  Probably will go as fast as a stock WBX, but it looks good.

Hub caps are attached to the axle with a dab of silicone. Lots of Dremel time to get it within weight spec.

Also made this one because I was having fun with the Dremel, wanted to include something patriotic and also so I could attach the GoPro to it and send it down.

Happy St Patrick's Day

Got some time to play, despite the freakish New England weather.  It was bright and sunny, 38 degrees out and snowing big fluffy flakes this morning.  Sitting there looking out my window, with a cup of tea, staring at the VW and planning my day when it started to snow.

Luckily it did not last long.

Largest project is the suspension / brakes upgrade.  Will also take the most time.  Need to get that going ASAP, but cant realistically do it in sub 40 weather as it has to be done outside and not in the garage.  There is sandblasting to do, and then the subsequent painting which requires a certain level of warmth and the ability to raise up the Thingamajigger to a level not possible in my flat roof 1950's garage.

So that project will have to wait until next month.

As for now - the heckeblendes are being painted, the intake scoops are being painted, the grille spoiler is also being painted.  My black dash is ready, but I need the dash in to move it.

I think this week I will drop the gas tank, install the stainless coolant lines and re-do the heater hoses.  The tank was re plumbed a couple years ago, but I will obtain a kit anyway.  My tank sender has been off since then, so it will be nice to be able to fix that too.  Despite my low ceiling, I can do this task inside.

SUCK.

February has sucked.  Did nothing but travel for work.

March is shaping up to be better weather wise, but have not had much time to consider the VW.  Personal setback will drive me to the garage - just to occupy my mind with something else.  Should work out for the Thingamajigger.

Did play yesterday and installed my new Transporter badge.  Sexy!
